Lung Volume Reduction Coil (LVRC) for treatment of pulmonary emphysema

pneumThe term “Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease” (COPD) is used to refer to two major diseases that often coexist in the same patient: chronic bronchitis and emphysema; this is a progressive, debilitating disease that causes a deterioration of lung function, through an irreversible obstruction of the airways and destruction of lung areas. It is clinically manifested by cough, phlegm and a progressive shortness of breath during exercise and, in severe cases, even at rest.

The RePneu® Lung Volume Reduction Coil (LVRC), produced by PneumRx, is an implantable device designed to improve lung function in patients with emphysema. The device consists in a sterile coil and an applying system for a sterile, disposable, single-patient procedures, comprising a cartridge, a catheter, a guide and an applicator.

The shape-memory coil is made of Nitinol and is inserted in a straight position in the airways; the coil recovers a predetermined curved shape once that is released. The coil compresses the lung tissue and reduces its volume, applying tension on the surrounding tissue and restoring its elasticity; in this manner the air is directed towards healthier areas of the lung. This therapy is targeted to affected regions of the lung, therefore the achievement of an adequate effect may require more implants. A single application system allows to implant multiple coils in the same patient.

The coil is available in 3 different lengths (100 mm, 125 mm, 150 mm) to fit any anatomical variations. The distal end and the proximal end of the coil are designed to reside in the respiratory tract having an inner diameter, respectively, of 2 mm and 6 mm.

The RePneu® Lung Volume Reduction Coils (LVRC) are produced by PneumRx, Inc. and exclusively distributed on the national territory by MOSS S.p.A.
